The Litchfield County Choral Union is a community chorus serving northwestern Connecticut, eastern New York state and western Massachusetts with the finest of the Choral Art for 119 years. Join us in the 1906 Music Shed on the expansive and beautiful Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate in Norfolk Connecticut, for performances under the direction of Jonathan F. Babbitt, Music Director. Numbering on average 75 members, the Choral Union is open to all singers without audition and strives to carry out the joyous spirit of its original dedication in 1899: "to honor the composer and his works in the most elevated conditions".
Music Director Jonathan F. Babbitt is a graduate of Yale University and the Yale School of Music, where he was Director of the Yale Freshman Chorus and Associate Director of the Yale Glee Club under the tutelage of Fenno Heath. Active as a clinician, conductor, adjudicator and composer, Babbitt has appeared across the United States, Canada and Europe with choral groups performing repertoire from the Renaissance to the contemporary. His compositions have premiered at the prestigious International Contemporary Music Festival in Bonn, Germany, and at Connecticut and Rhode Island Music Educator's Association events here in the United States. Babbitt holds concurrent positions as Director of Choral Activities and Coordinator of Applied Music Studies at Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut, Music Director of the Greater New Bedford Choral Society in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Music Director of the New England Sacred Camerata in Adamsville, Rhode Island. With mezzo-soprano Allison Messier he also maintains Sakonnet Music, a private music teaching and recording studio in Adamsville, Rhode Island.
